James Baker Backs Reinstating the Draft

Draft
I'm with Jimmy of AZ. How can you force people to fight for a cuase that they don't agree with any way? I'm aginst having KIDS go to war. That is Americas future genoration people! I know that is I was drafted I would fight going with every fiber of my body. I would go live in a war zone before joining the militay. The only reason we even got involved overseas was becuase of oil, the bombings was just an excuse.
Draft
Since 1975, the Us Military has been an all volunteer force. Adding draftees would lower the standard of the average soldier, as they would be less inclined to train as hard or have the same desire to succeed as a volunteer. Also, given that todays military is a lot more technological than in the past, it seems to me that a draftee probably wouldn't have the time to learn about the complex weapons systems we have and be a liability in combat. Add to that the fact that the Army has already lowered its standards for entry, due to the increased tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we see a lot more recruits with felony waivers. Should we further devalue the military by introducing people who don't want to be there in the first place?
draft
ya man like you said it would help our crime rate an lot and help kids make something out of there life. also i think that all kids from ages 18to27 should at lest serve there country from 2 to three years It would help and lot of kids and adults
Draft
I find it a little disgusting that so many people on here would like to see me dead. I am a twenty year old who loathes all war and have opposed the war since it began. Anybody who thinks that a draft makes it harder to go to war obviously has not read there history books. It makes it a helluva lot easier because the military is given access to an endless supply of troops. If we had a draft then this war would have spread to Iran by now.
I also find it a tad hypocrticial that people obsess over "chickenhawkes" I can't stand chickenhawkes just as much as the next guy but if there was a draft then you would be forcing a good anti-war progressive like me to serve alongside them. You are just as bad as a chickenhawk if you advocate conscription but wouldn't join up yourself for this war.
Conscription is slavery pure and simple.
draft
I think putting in the draft would be one of the most important issues that would help the young people to improve themself not only character but education. I think the biggest thing it would help it cut are crime rate probably by 50%, today the young people have nothing to do , nothing to look forward to this way they get out of school get drafted, that eliminates kids getting into trouble, when they get out of the service they earn a scholarship then go to college, like I said the crime would come way down. pardon my grammer.
draft
you live in the USA you better protect it. So bring back the draft!
Draft
Some government service should be required. How about the ones who go in the military fight the battles while the ones who picked public service come in after the battle has been won and do the clean up, fix up and re-establish the local governments who will eventually take back their country and run it.
The Draft
I kind of go along with Heinlein, the author. Universal service, not necessarily military service, should be mandatory for every person in this county from age 18 to age 21.
NO EXCEPTIONS.
And the completion of this simple 3 year term of service should be documented for full citizenship rights, like the right to vote.
If you don't want to serve, that's OK. You just don't have teh right to vote in any election. EVER. You want to be a strap hanger, then be one.
Oh. And the same requitement for voting goes double for government service, police and other para-military organizations.
If you want to participate in your country, be a part of its service corps.
Wake Up Call
I remember being in the Vietnam War draft lottery.
At first I supported the war.
Then I was opposed to the war.
The only thing I can say now is that Baker is half-right.
It would raise the stakes for any decision to go to war.
But the end result would be even worse.
The only chips left on the table after the war would be the same Senator's sons/daughters.
The rest of us would be cannon-fodder ( as always ).
re: Elitist Swine
James Baker is a veteran of the Korean War, Sherlock--read the article. He is not armchair quarterbacking on this issue.
