Columbine Anniversary Sees Push to Close Gun Show 'Loophole'
Reader Comments
What LOOPHOLE?
Excuse me, but I go to gun shows all the time. If you want to purchase a gun at a show, you have to file all the same paperwork and do EXACTLY the same thing as you would at a store.
So where is the "loophole?"
If it is that some people sell guns in the parking lot, or under the table, this is ALREADY ILLEGAL.
The entire "gun show loophole" is a contrived issue.
Craig B.
Well, it's nice to hear some rational input from the pro-gun rights side of the issue. I don't think this is the kind of patient discussion that Son of NJ was hoping for. Thanks for representing your side so well, Craig. You seem to be the patient, thoughtful, responsible citizen that we can all trust with a weapon.
Gun Control
See what Gun Controller California and a lying California attorney, Gun Controller Steven T. Schoonover, and flip flopper James K. Olson did here to a Nevada citizen’s right to have a gun to protect herself after James K. Olson had broken into this Nevada citizen’s home! Gun Controllers Among Us, Marin County California Courts
Most liberal Gun Controller Marin County California has repeatedly thumbed their nose at the US Constitution, then imposed their illegal Gun Controller actions onto a Nevada citizen. What's next?
Lying California attorney, Steven T. Schoonover had the Nevada citizen served at 7:30 Thursday evening in Nevada for a 9 am the following Monday court in California and the California incompetent Gun Controller judge allowed that 1 day notice although illegal as have to be served more than 10 days before a hearing and furthermore it was to a Nevada citizen!
Three strikes you’re out lying California attorney, Gun Controller Steven T. Schoonover

Gun's and the Law
Why does this always turn into an 'us' vs 'them' argument on the issues of gun control? We all all Americans for Gods sake! This is an issue that needs to be addressed comprehensively.
Speaking as one of those 'Northeastern Liberals' who apparently wants to take guns away from everyone... I favor limited gun control. I think Background checks are a good thing and delays are an excellent preventive measure. IN fact, weren't those ideas original supported by gun lobby organizations like the NRA? The problem is its viewed as an inconvenience and yeah it is to those of us who have committed no crime and are capable of using them responsibly.
What ever happened to Patience people? Do you need a gun so badly you can't wait a few days for it to show up? To me, the fact that we can prevent someone with a violent record getting his hand on a gun at a show and then killing someone, by just waiting a little bit of time is a worthy sacrifice.
Here is a theoretical situation: You are a gun dealer, you sell a gun to someone at a show with no checks.. A couple of days later you find out someone has been killed and whats worse that person was a criminal who bought the gun from YOU. Is that a situation you really want to be in? Its a bit overly dramatic but it is a valid point.
Yes, we have to make sure our constitutional right is upheld and protected and I will fight to make sure we can bear arms and own guns. It is our RIGHT and not a privilege, one that should be defended like the rest of our rights. But I also support preventive action, things that can help prevent violence. A little inconvenience does not take away our rights, and could save lives.
We as Americans really are a passionate people about things we believe in. We will be heard and we will be loud, and it is not a bad thing. But when anger gets in there it becomes a problem. I think education of guns and gun safety should not merely be something similar to 'abstinence only' education like it tends to be now. Our children are not stupid and if taught properly how to deal with and treat guns they will grow up with a respect for what they are and can do.
Awareness I feel is the only true and reasonable action that can truly prevent gun violence and that simply saying 'No' to guns is folly. The more we know, the better off we are, and its true with guns as well.

What does that have to do with the article? The main point is that there is a drive to close a legal loophole in the existing gun control laws. The NRA and like-minded people have a saying that if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. However, they never seem to support the efforts to keep guns out of the hands of outlaws in the first place. The more guns there are in this country, the more opportunities criminals have to obtain them. But we don't have to make it so easy for them.
Frank Lautenberg
Senator Lautenberg is your typical northeastern liberal who, having sworn an oath to the Constitution, now holds it in contempt. Unconstitutional gun laws have been one of his favorite initiatives.
keep guns away from our children
It is unfortunate that this seems to be a political issue. I have no problem with people owning guns, collecting, hunting, and so forth. But folks... let's at least do our best to keep guns away from our children. There is way too much gun violence taking place in our schools, and adding some regulation make it harder for youngsters to buy guns at gun shows, or requiring parents to store guns securely when there are children around, makes sense. Check out this website, which makes it really clear how big the gun violence issue is in our schools: http://www.schoolshooting.org. The Columbine shooting was a massive tragedy, but it's still only the tip of the iceberg.
gun violence
I think a lot of people who saw the movie "Bowling for Columbine" did not get one of the messages of the movie. That is, a lot of the violence we have in the U.S. stems from our historical use of violence to solve any issue. Guns are merely a method of perpetuating this national propensity. In Canada, for instance, where guns are more tightly controlled but still pretty available, there is a lot less violence due to the national Canadian characteristic that does not emphasize violence as a means to every end.
The above being the case, new gun laws are probably not going to solve very much. There are so many guns in this country that can be stolen, traded, sold black market, and so on, that new gun laws will not stop violent people from getting them. Mexico has some tough gun laws on the books. If you don't believe that, just get caught south of the border with a gun in your car and see how long you spend in a Mexican jail. A person here in AZ was kept in prison there for an extended time a few years ago when all he had in his SUV were some 9mm shells, not even a gun! And from the gun deaths in Mexico now, 1300 in Juarex last year, you can see how effective those laws are in stopping violence. El Paso TX, across the border from Juarez, with its "liberal" American gun laws, had 2 gun-related murders during the same period.
I personally am old enough to have seen us bombarded with new laws during my lifetime: seat belts, no smoking, background checks for firearms, helmets when riding motorcycles, special licenses for riding motorcycles, much tougher licensing standards for semi truck drivers, harsh child abuse penalties, in many cases unjustified, and the list goes on and on. Have all these new laws accomplished much? Maybe in some cases but overall they have mostly resulted in harassment of the average law abiding citizen.
In conclusion, the solution to the plethora of laws that are popping up to cover every conceivable situation is to develop a 49 state coalition that would enforce a law that requires all native born Califormians to remain in that state for perpetuity with no chance of migration to bring their stupid "fix everything with a law or a Homeowners Association" mentality to the rest of the country. Perhaps then some sanity might ensue.
gun law's
How many people do you think die from drunk driver's everyyear ? I know it is a great deal more than die from gun's ! mayby we should have a anti drunk driver's lie down to protest against drinking and drunk driver's . I am all for background check's before people can purchase a gun , but i am so sick of people trying to mess with my and other's right's to own gun's. I am all for tough gun law's against anyone who uses a gun or any weapon illegally , but honest law abiding people should alway's be allowed to protect their family and themselves. I think alcohole should be illegal, not gun's.
gun control
i dont mind background checks. what i do mind is the government making it so a collector or individual who's looking for a gun will have to go thru a dealer to get it. these people think that these people were killed only because there were guns. if they were killed by bow and arrow they would be just as dead. its sad that they died. but its not the guns that do it. if you really want someone to blame. blame the press. they like to spread all over the country about things like this for ratings. but someone will see it and say " hey here is a way to become famous let me do it to." you think im wrong. look at octomom . the only reason she had all them kids was to get suckers to pay her for them. with all the free stuff and a new house. they need to be taken from her and given to someone who loves them for them. now back to guns. the democrats are not gonna stop till everyone is dependant on them. i work hard for my money to just give it to these creeps who laze around waiting for a check. red yellow black or white it dont matter.everytime a dem. gets in office the first thing he does is start giving money away and expecting us to cover it. and there trying to do guns the same. take them from the ones who N E E D them. to protect ourselves .people wake up gov. will not stop till they bleed us. and there gonna do it a little at a time. and the dem. are leading the way. lets not be hogs and follow the one with the corn . lets get rid of these leeches and take our country back before we are overrun and imprisoned.
