President-Elect Obama Considering Doug Kmiec for Vatican Ambassador

By Paul Bedard, Washington Whispers.

Here's a question being asked in Catholic circles: Should President-elect Barack Obama name an ambassador to the Holy See who didn't support his candidacy? If Obama wants to make the Vatican happy, he might, since he's pro-choice and anyone who endorsed him could be viewed as backing his position on abortion. It's an issue because Obama is said to be considering Doug Kmiec, a prominent conservative Catholic who endorsed Obama in the election, angering fellow conservative Catholics. A priest even refused Kmiec Communion because of his support for Obama. The debate will most likely continue for a while, since Obama is still filling out his cabinet. But if Kmiec is chosen, there is a winner in the Catholic world: the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a pro-religion legal defense firm. Kmiec is a board member, as was the current ambassador, Mary Ann Glendon.

beyond Reagan and back to Jefferson

The appointment as ambassador to the Vatican is a

a disappointment. We need to move toward a strict policy of

separation between church and state. If the president needs

any consultation with religious leaders--Jewish, Christian,

Islamic--this can be acheived without faith based tax supported ambassadorships. The former president Reagan was wrong in making this appointment. Obama should continued the history of the disestablishment begun by Jefferson and Madison in later

colonial Virigina and reaffirmed in the constitution as well

as in the legal tradition of making the support of religion

and its agents a matter of voluntary private initiative.

Bill Maher for Ambassador

Bill Maher would be a great ambassador to the Holy See.

Either him, or Julia Sweeney.

In either case, we have Americans who were born Catholic, and have made their views on religion crystal clear.

LAT

who cares

When will the people of America realize, that 'their' beliefs are NOT everyone else, with regards to religion?

THIS IS AMERICA, WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO WORSHIP AS WE SEE FIT................

No Ambassador to Vatican needed..........THE VATICAN IS A CITY NO A COUNTRY.
