Washington Whispers by Paul Bedard

Lieberman May Get Away With Endorsing McCain

November 13, 2008 05:23 PM ET | Paul Bedard | Permanent Link | Print

With President-elect Barack Obama indicating that he would like to face a Senate at peace on Inauguration Day, there are growing expectations that the Democrats won't punish renegade Sen. Joe Lieberman, the independent who backed Sen. John McCain in the presidential race. Insiders say that Obama's team has sought to push a compromise that would let Lieberman keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

The sources say that the Senate Democratic leaders may let that happen, though they would like Lieberman to make some kind of statement or apology regarding his McCain support. "People understand that Obama is trying to be a statesman on this stuff and he doesn't want to walk into a lot of drama," said a Senate leadership aide. However, the compromise that would let Lieberman keep his chairmanship does anger some senators and their aides, none of whom are willing yet to publicly express it. "It seems like Lieberman is going to get away with it, and that has a lot people angry," says an aide to a senator pushing for Lieberman's ouster from the chairmanship.

Intellectual honesty a liability?

What exactly is Lieberman supposedly getting away with, an unprecedented bank heist?

No, just expressing intellectual honesty to his peers. So much for diversity of thought within the Democratic party.

The liberals are acting as if he's been reading a biography of Benedict Arnold, instead of simply acting on his conscience. If McCain had one, I could perhaps understand a little more of the liberal illuminati spleen being displayed. But Obama's in office. They didn't "lose anything thanks to him."

No free thinking tolerated in the capital!

Leiberman

Give me a break! How ridiculous to read that there is a possibility of Joe Leiberman being "punished" because of his support of McCain during the election! What kind of sick democrat ever brought that up in the first place! They are all

falling over backwards for Hillary......what about her "unkind" remarks about Obama during the debates! The democrat so-called leaders in congress all need their heads examined. Isn't this supposed to be a free democracy?

Lieberman

Nothing against the guy personally for doing what he felt he had or preferred to do, but Democrats probably remember that revenge is a dish best served cold. Joe is not going to know who his friends are and just may want to keep an eye on his back.

Bobbles Poll: Vice President Hillary?

Biden, Clinton, Richardson and Edwards Bobbleheads, for Washington Whispers

A new Obama campaign book suggests that Hillary Clinton was almost picked by Barack Obama as his vice president. Would you have picked Joe Biden as vice president or one of the other 2008 Democratic primary candidates?
