Washington Whispers by Paul Bedard

Order to President-Elect Barack Obama: Cut Health Costs

November 06, 2008 02:01 PM ET | Paul Bedard | Permanent Link | Print

We took a serious path in our postelection Whispers poll, and it seems readers are glad we did. Because it's the serious issues of rising healthcare costs and the plight of Social Security that they want President-elect Barack Obama to address after fixing the economy and ending the war. And so much for the energy crisis: Those polled put on the bottom of their agenda spending to develop new hybrid engine technology.

The Whispers Poll

Jobs 1 and 2 for the new president and new Congress taking over in January will be the economy and the war.

What should be their next top agenda item?

Work to reduce healthcare costs 47%
Fix Social Security and Medicare 33%
Slash Pentagon spending 8%
Probe the administration's handling of the war 8%
Fund new car hybrid technology 4%
