What Symbolism? Lincoln Theme for Barack Obama's Inauguration

November 05, 2008 03:06 PM ET | Paul Bedard, Nikki Schwab | Permanent Link | Print

It's no surprise that the inauguration of the first black president would have a Lincoln-esque theme. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, which takes care of a big chunk of the inaugural planning, announced today that "A New Birth of Freedom" would be the official inaugural theme. It will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln using a phrase taken from his Gettysburg address. The theme is usually based on history and guides some of the readings and the artwork that get used during the festivities, including the big piece of American art that will hang behind the president at the inaugural luncheon. As Whispers previously reported, planning for the big day had already been underway, at least for the events that will be held at the Capitol Building. However, it will now be Barack Obama who has to appoint a separate Presidential Inaugural Committee that will plan all the other official events in Washington.

Song submission for inaugural

I would like to submit a song so typical for a new beginning. How do I go about getting it to the people in charge?

The theme is UNITY.

Praise the LORD. Praise the Lord, people of God. Nations of the world, proclaim the Word: The LORD is God, the LORD is One. The LORD is One.//We are one with the Lord in freedom. We are one with the Lord in truth./We are one with the Lord in justice./We are one with the Lord in peace.//Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, people of God. Nations of the world, proclaim the Word: The Lord is God. The Lord is one.

The song comes complete with the music arrangement.

I am an immigrant/refugee/expellee from my native East Prussia (formerly Germany) and came to America in 1956. My song expresses my hope for freedom, truth, justice, and peace for all Americans.

Please help me place my song at the inaugural. Thanks.
