Suze Orman’s Coming Out at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner

The girls stole this weekend’s Human Rights Campaign 12th Annual National Dinner. Sure, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden was to be the headliner, but he canceled because of the illness of his mother-in-law. That left the evening to Sen. Hillary Clinton, who filled in via video for Biden, and National Equality Award winner Suze Orman, who accepted it with life partner Kathy K. T. Travis. Orman revealed she was a lesbian in the New York Times in February 2007, and the duo were clearly pleased with the award, as these pictures show. To cheers, as she endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, Orman said, “I’ve never been as honored as I am tonight, and I’m honored because I’m honored by people that I know you know what it takes to be who we are. It’s not easy to stand up and to say I’m a lesbian.” She added: “It may not be easy, but it certainly is the right thing to do.” The dinner in presidential years is always a huge event, made more so each year with the political and financial muscle the Human Rights Campaign has.

As we posted this item, the Human Rights Campaign pulled down the pictures of Orman and her partner as well as the YouTube video of her 16-minute speech. Said a Human Rights Campaign spokesman: "Unfortunately, we did not have a licensing agreement to run the video of her speech." However, we're in luck. Another, separate, site has great pictures of the event and a few of Orman here.

Is Suze climbing back in the closet?

This doesn't make sense.

"Said a Human Rights Campaign spokesman: "Unfortunately, we did not have a licensing agreement to run the video of her speech." However, we're in luck. Another, separate, site has great pictures of the event and a few of Orman here."

They didn't have "licensing?" I don't know that HRC hired the videographer, so maybe they really didn't have license to publish the speech. On the other hand, they had the video so they must have been the creator of the video and so why wouldn't they have license? They surely had licensing to use the still photographs because they hire the photographers, but the photos of Suze and her partner mysteriously disappeared from the HRC site, too.

HRC also canceled the media meet-and-greet with Suze before the event. They used Biden not being there as an excuse, but he was never supposed to be at the meet and greet anyway. So why was it canceled?

Who did they not have permission from? Suze? Why would she come and accept an award, give a great speech, then try to hide it? With the financial meltdown and her potential for publicity, is she suppressing the reminder that she is gay? I really can't believe it after hearing her speak, but no other reason explains the missing photos. Someone really should ask these questions.

You can see her plain as day accepting the HRC award in the other great link you provide.

Where's the video/pictures

I heard the speach on HRC's The Agenda on XM Radio. They said to go to their website for pictures, etc and nothing... I had to DIG and DIG to even find anything about it. WTF?

How can she say the supportive things she did at the event and then be nonexistant on their website? What's up, Suze?? Thought you said you had ALWAYS been out.

Where is the video?

I really wanted to view the video of Suze's HRC Acceptance Speech, but I understand the Orman "people" had it removed? Too bad!
