Washington Whispers by Paul Bedard

Chuck Norris and Black Belt Patriotism

September 05, 2008 06:42 PM ET | Paul Bedard | Permanent Link | Print

Actor Chuck Norris, star of Walker, Texas Ranger, martial arts pro, and spokesman for Total Gym infomercials, appears to be moving deeper into politics. Long a fixture in GOP circles, he was Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's wingman during the primaries. And now he's releasing his first political book, Black Belt Patriotism, an eight-point plan to get the nation back on track based on the teachings of the Founding Fathers. So, is he the next Jesse Ventura or Ronald Reagan? "I couldn't be a politician," he laughs during an interview. And not just because of the media. "Even if I was in Congress or the Senate, I'm one of 100 or 435. How can you get anything done?" His solution: cut House members to one or two per state so there is greater accountability. And start a populist party. His book cites major problems that need the Walker treatment. The biggest: American debt. Next: greed in government. He has hope, though, in kids. "They are more concerned about social issues than trying to make a buck."

Chuck Norris' patriotism

Norris is a patriot. his secret: hard work and determination. no short-cuts. no side deals. but personal responsibility and fair-mindedness.

we in this country are getting too lazy and irresponsible; this is the cause of most of our problems and sickness.

Taxation

The maximum tax since 1913 is 60%. It is now 35%. The bottom 50% earn 12.5% of all earnings. We have people earning billions that pay from 5% to 35% while the people earning 75,000 pay 25%. What is wrong with this picture?

Be careful

Though I agree with Mr. Norris on many things, limiting the number of representatives in Congress is not one of them. Our Founding Fathers worked out this system after MANY MANY days and nights of discussion and compromise. We need to remember that this system of Representatives per Population was one of the checks and balances built into the Constitution. We have already done away with one of those checks (The 17th Amendment changed how Senators were selected). Originally, the Senate was to represent the needs of the States while the House represented the needs of the people. Yes, it seems off balance at times, but it has worked for over 200 years, while other systems have failed. Better to limit the perks and powers Congress keeps giving itself, limit the "pork-barrel spending" it continues to thrive on. Better to require our representatives actually listen to the PEOPLE'S voices, rather than a small loud minority!
