PETA Pushes Obama to Adopt a Mutt

Mutts are great, but...

Througout my life, I love and have owned mutts and purebred dogs alike and can personally vouch for the fact there is no difference in the love that you give and receive from a dog, regardless of lineage. And I agree that saving the life of a shelter animal is of paramount importance.

But what about the girls' allergies? If a dog is truly a Heinz 57, there is no way to know for sure the parentage/breed of the dog, therefore you would not know what physical traits the offspring will display, making it very difficult to predict and control the pet dander issue. As a youthful asthmatic, I had to live with this concern as well.

I would encourage Sen. Obama to consider his childrens' health first and to go with a purebred. It would be heartbreaking for all parties involved if the dog came home and had to be returned after all the bonding occurred because his daughter's allergies were affected.

Besides, it's completely fatuous for PETA to say that buying a purebred dog supports puppy mills. This is absolutely an oversimplification! Go to a reputable breeder where you can see the dogs and how they are kept, and never EVER buy a dog or cat, or any type of animal from a pet store. Period!

PETA PUSHES OBAMA TO ADOPT A MUTT

I say who cares. The Barrack's don't have a PET now so why even get one so the SECRET SERVICE can Babysit it. I say KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID-Vote for the one that have had the PETS for Years.

JMHO,

Obama Dog

I hope the Obama's go to a reputable breeder of purebred dogs, as that's the best way to get a consistent type and temperament of dog for their family. All purebreds are not inbred (at least you would KNOW who their parents are; more so than the crossbreed from whom you don't know whether his parents were littermates or not).

However, most of us should just back off trying to tell him what to do and let them make the best decision for their family with no pressure from the likes of extremists such as PETA, HSUS and other Animal Rights fanatics whose real agenda is to end pet ownership.

Yes, their agenda isn't to save shelter animals (they kill nearly every animal they get their hands on) but to exterminate all pets.

Great Idea!

Another great idea from Ingrid Newkirk! I admire this woman so much for her tireless efforts to save animals from misery, homelessness, and abuse! What an angel for the animals! God bless you, Ingrid!

Yes, adoption is good. :)

I don't agree with PeTA 99% of the time (especially their long-term goals - no pets whatsoever!), but it would be great if the Obamas got a mixed-breed dog. The purebreed snobbery that runs rampant is absurd.

Domestic reform in its best

A fine idea on attacking and addressing one of the largest domestic problems (dog and cat overpopulation) in our country. See www.stoppuppymills.org for an example. PETA and Best Friends Animal Society are perfectly correct in encouraging Senator Obama and his family to adopt a dog instead of getting one from a breeder. Bravo PETA!

Just in Case You Read This

To the Future President of the United States,

I am a proud supporter of human and animal rights, but I would like to offer you my testimonial as a dog-owner. I adopted my wonderful all-American Mutt, Kalia, from a rescue group that rescued her just before she was to be killed. I can't tell you how or why, but I can tell she knows how lucky she is. Dogs feel pain and need and love and happyness just like we do. If you choose to adopt a rescue from a shelter or organization, he or she will feel a deep loyalty to you that only someone who has come out of the ashes can. I have every faith in you as my next president. I know you will do the right thing. My prayer for you is that your girls will learn ,from this experience, compassion and responsibility. Please consider a pound-dog or puppy. Do your part to end the mad cycle of breeding and euthenizing by being an example to our nation.

Please don't get a dog from a "breeder". As a politician, I don't need to tell you not to ever trust anyone who's financial interests would suffer from allowing what is right to prvail; no matter how they attempt to convince you, their interest is money.

Best Wishes for Your Family,

Daniella

New mantra for all prospective dog owners - adopt a dog and save a life!

But let's not just single out Barack Obama - these sentiments are valid for any of us considering a new family addition.

50,000 dogs, of all breeds, die each year here in Australia after being dumped, despite the great work of the shelters we have here. Hate to ponder what the figures are in the US and worldwide.

Visit your local pet rescue and dog adoption shelters and find a new best friend.

We did - and it was the best thing we ever did.

I say "Meh" for PETA but "Hooray" for rescue dogs!

I can't say that I'm much of a PETA fan, but I cannot say enough good about shelter and/or rescue pets. I have had three rescue cats and I have several friends and family members with rescue dogs, cats, and even one rabbit. Talk to people who own rescued animals and you will eventually hear something to the effect of, "They are just the best pets--it's like they *know*.."

And, they *are* just the best pets. I would actually recommend going with a local rescue group over a shelter as these groups will have (usually) already attended to any behavioral problems and done some basic training with the animal, so the dog might be more suitable for a family with young children (like the Obama family). But, either way, with all the homeless dogs out there, I can't imagine buying one from a breeder or a pet store.

Go PETA!!!

PETA is an amazing organization and they are right on target again! I love PETA and think they definetly deserve medals of compassion for all their great work to help out living beings of all species. I am a proud member of PETA and I fequently donate to this amazing organization!
