Fiorina Talks Up VP Hope

There's been lots of buzz that Sen. John McCain is considering business leaders for his vice presidential pick: FedEx's Frederick Smith, former eBay boss Meg Whitman, or former Hewlett-Packard head Carly Fiorina. Well now one sounds like she wants the post. Fiorina, now head of the Republican National Committee's Victory Committee, said she wouldn't mind being in his cabinet either. "There are many, many people who would be honored to serve in McCain's cabinet, and depending on the opportunity, I would be as well," she says. "One of the great things about my life right now is I have lots of options and lots of opportunities, and I have learned that if you're open to options and opportunities, the future tends to take care of itself. So I'm not really worried about what's next."

At issue: Many GOP strategists say it's crazy for McCain or Sen. Barack Obama to pick a nonpolitician to run for office. They worry that business execs, who are normally protected from the media and stockholders, will crumble under the pressure of an intense campaign. But Fiorina said that business leaders have a lot in common with politicians, at least when it comes to running big organizations. What's more, she said that business leaders often have far better success. Take the issue of running over budget. Fiorina said that while politicians might talk cuts and freezes, CEOs have no choice but to cut costs and freeze wages or hiring. "I think there are some things that government can borrow from business," she says.

As for her chances to get on the McCain ticket, Fiorina describes herself as more than a simple former tech executive. She's been involved in debating a wide variety of government policies for the past three years and, of course, now runs the GOP fundraising and get-out-the-vote effort on behalf of McCain.

Carly...perfect VP choice for Republicans

You guys are missing the point.

Carly is being brought in to leverage her experience with HP. Take an iconic company (country) run it into the ground, and then merge it with another company (country) because that is the only option now to survive. So some people lose their jobs, get their benefits reduced, etc....gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet. People will just be so grateful that they still have a company (country) left after the way it got completely screwed up they will forget about how good it used to be.

Meximerica here we come! We have to merge, you see, to be more competitive with the Chinese after the way Management screwed things up ("hmm..we have the know-how but are out of oil...Mexico has lots of oil we can get! We can use Mexico's low cost model for dentistry on our US citizens and save money! They have lots of low-priced labor we can bring in to replace all our overpaid factory workers! There is just a perfect synergy between these two countries!"). Carly, time to fire up that "clean room"! We have to figure out what language should the new country standardize on...

Just hope your life is not on the "RIF" list or your role is seen as "redundant" in the new Country. Those of us that do survive it can look forward to years without getting a raise.

In all seriousness, she is a complete joke. Made her name at Lucent using smoke and mirrors sales numbers (that nearly ended up destroying that company when she left). Came to HP, tried to change "the way" without even understanding what it was and put the company into the beamis. Merged with Compaq and her ego got in the way so she ran Capellas off (did not want to share the spotlight) leaving the company with zero people with operational experience. She figured as long as she was out doing photo ops with Christina Aguilera the company would just sort of run itself. Hurd came in and salvaged the company by focusing on operations and cost control, and now she runs around wanting credit for it. A total fraud and the last of that whole, bad "CEOlebrity" generation.

A perfect republican..don't blame me for what happened while I was in charge if it is bad, I will take credit for good things that happen while I am in charge (even if I am not sure why things do work from time to time) and if good things happen when I leave, then it is all about the groundwork I had laid. If she is really all that and a bag of greasy chips, why has she been out of work since she got canned?

Not for president....

One thing to consider is how well the VP would be able to step in and serve as president. I wonder if having an MBA really qualifies her to serve as president should something happen to John McCain.

I would bet money against it.

Corporate leaders are really not too much different than politicians; both have big egos and are overpaid!!!

The worst thing Obama or McCain can do is to pick a female running mate just to have a woman on the ticket.

Quality

the fact is all the Compaq stock owners wanted Carli´s proposition to go through, all the HP stock owners didn´t.

Bottom line both won because she was tough enough to beat the incumbents (Son of Hewlett etc). Don´t know about the VP job but she is just one hell of a tough woman.
