Washington Whispers by Paul Bedard

There Really Are Boy Scouts at CIA

March 06, 2008 11:25 PM ET | Paul Bedard | Permanent Link | Print

CIA Director and Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden this month gave back to a group that put him in his first uniform: the Boy Scouts. "Made it up to Life Scout," he told a group of elite Scouts picked to present the president and top officials with the Scouts' annual report to the nation. Hayden said he got into scouting through his Pittsburgh church. "It got us out of the city; got us out to the camp; it was a great time," he said, adding that lots of agents have been Scouts. Being the best of the Scouts, the kids had some questions for Hayden. Like: Is it hard to get a job at the CIA? Apparently so. While he can't say how many people the CIA employs, Hayden fessed that the agency hired a "real small fraction" of the 130,000 applicants last year. He was also asked for his favorite CIA movie. "Haven't seen it," he said, noting that most are "a bit negative." But then he added, "Spy Kids, that was good."
