Washington Whispers by Paul Bedard

Gunning for Votes, Scott Jigs for Huck

January 18, 2008 05:38 PM ET | Paul Bedard | Permanent Link | Print

Oh, they sneered and giggled in the Big Media when Mike Huckabee picked up the endorsement of bass fishing and deer hunting legend Ray Scott last week. But we know the truth, right? A nod from the guy who founded Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, or bass, the Whitetail Institute of North America, and Bassmaster magazine and TV, counts big, which is why, for example, former President George H. W. Bush sought him out. Old school through and through, Scott didn't dis others when hyping Huckabee to us. "I don't think there's a bad guy, or woman, in the crowd," he says of the 2008 presidential cast. "But there's none like Huckabee." He credits Huck with being a good outdoorsman and environmentalist. "We know," says the 74-year-old moderate, "that some species take a licking when the environment goes to mud."
