Duke's Mute, but It's Obama for Kitty

Michael Dukakis went from standard-bearer of the Democratic Party to black sheep after his landslide loss to George H.W. Bush. But he's not done with politics. The 1988 Democratic nominee says he's impressed with his party's current crop of candidates, but only his wife, Kitty, will name a favorite: Sen. Barack Obama. Still a student of politics, Dukakis has a fear about 2008. "None of the campaigns seem to understand the importance of precinct-based organizing," he says. That's why he's helping the party install a captain in the nation's 200,000 precincts. He has also learned to beat his critics to the punch with self-deprecating humor. "Now consider the source," he says. "If I was so smart, I'd have got myself elected. But you're supposed to learn from experience, as the Greeks say."
