Washington Whispers by Paul Bedard

Up for Auction: Clinton Scandals

November 02, 2007 10:20 PM ET | Paul Bedard | Permanent Link | Print

They cost the Clintons over $4 million, but you can have a piece of presidential scandal memorabilia for a lot less. Up for auction: official documents personally signed by Bill and Hillary Clinton approving the payment by his legal defense fund of massive lawyer bills stemming from the Whitewater, Monica Lewinsky, and Chinagate affairs. The auctioneer, Bill Panagopulos of Alexander Autographs, says they're worth up to $4,000 each and calls them timely considering the recent fundraising mess that prompted Hillary Clinton to return over $800,000 in presidential campaign donations. For those who want more, his upcoming online auction includes this bit of audacity: a blindly sent fundraising letter from the Clinton Legal Expense Trust to Lewinsky's mother and father, upon which Bernard Lewinsky scribbled, "You must be morons to send me this letter!"
