TV Layoffs in Miami, Denver, and Sacramento

Planning a career in TV news? Then pay attention. Three different metro newspapers are reporting layoffs at local CBS stations.

The Sacramento Bee reported today that the CBS affiliate in Sacramento would be letting go an uncertain number of employees. The newspaper quoted a station executive as saying the layoffs were "the consequence of new technology."

In Denver, KCNC-Channel 4 has laid off a morning anchor, an assignment editor, a producer, a writer, an editor, and a community affairs coordinator, according to the Denver Post. The story quotes station employees as saying engineering jobs might be cut and other positions will go unfilled. This time, the economy and the state of the journalism industry are blamed for the reductions.

And in Miami, the Miami Herald quoted an unnamed source Thursday as saying CBS4 in Miami had laid off about 10 employees. A station spokesman told the paper the company doesn't comment on personnel matters.

We called Mike Nelson, vice president of communications for CBS Television Stations, to see what was up. He told us that every CBS station is different but that all are looking for ways to operate more efficiently and effectively.

Layoffs

Heard on KFWB just now that anchors Ann Martin and Harold Greene, plus reporter Jennifer Sabih, are among those being laid off in Los Angeles. When I checked the CBS2 Web site, Jennifer Sabih's bio was no longer there. Sad, sad, sad.

CBS cuts

San Francisco just got hit hard also.

Even more

I believe they also had layoffs in Dallas/Ft.Worth.
