The Nutty 'Obama Is a Muslim' Charge Is Back (Now With a Hitler Comparison!)

And here I thought that the Washington Times was making a concerted effort to steer away from its roots as a fringe, niche publication. Well today, commentator Frank Gaffney dragged them off the sanity wagon.

Gaffney has an op-ed suggesting Barack Obama is "America's first Muslim president." First he frames his argument as symbolic, as Bill Clinton was often referred to as America's first black president. "This is not to say, necessarily, that Mr. Obama actually is a Muslim any more than Mr. Clinton actually is black."

Then Gaffney pivots and...says Barack Obama actually is a (secret) Muslim. (No, actually it's not a direct pivot: First Gaffney compares the president to Adolf Hitler. Seriously.)

With Mr. Obama's unbelievably ballyhooed address in Cairo Thursday to what he calls "the Muslim world" (hereafter known as "the Speech"), there is mounting evidence that the president not only identifies with Muslims, but actually may still be one himself.

His pieces of "evidence" include the fact that Obama makes nice with the locals and his audience by using their religious lingo. As the Washington Independent's David Weigel notes:

Did Gaffney contact Ben Rhodes, the very white and very non-Muslim speechwriter who did plenty of work on this speech? Does he actually think that stretching to use local or religious rhetoric is proof that the speaker is hiding his secret connections?

Or as Matthew Yglesias observes:

By this standard, I suppose I'm only pretending to be Jewish since when I find myself in a church (visiting a nice cathedral, say, or attending a friend's wedding) I try to comport myself correctly.

Gaffney, Weigel also notes, is from the Obama's-not-a-natural-born-citizen conspiracy camp. He's also a national security commentator not infrequently seen as a talking head on cable networks. Matt Duss also has some good stuff on the nuttery here.

All non-Christians likened to criminals?

To Sally Hill of TX:

You say: "We may share this planet with people of all different religions, beliefs, ideals, and opinions, but that doesn't mean we have to try to identify with those opposing views, and especially those that want to destroy us. I have to share my community with a garden variety of criminals, but you will NOT see me trying to reach out to communicate and engage them. I'm smart enough to know a leopard when I see one and to try to pet him will probably result in the loss of my hand. If that makes me a moron - so be it. "

What? You do realize you are comparing all non-Christians with criminals, that you have to share the planet with them with equal trepidation, that any non-Christain you reach out to will hurt you... did you mean to say that? If yes, then this is the precise problem with this country.

Allah is Arabic for "God"

What a bunch of paranoid fools we have on the right in this country.

Obama is not a Muslim, BUT......

Although I believe that Obama is a Christian, he's still a whacky, liberal girly-man goofball. His recent speech just reinforces my belief that his foreign policy strategy is for everyone to hold hands and sing "We Are the World". For someone who is supposed to be so intelligent, his level of naivete is astounding.

In my view, Obama wants to base his foreign policy on how he thinks the world should be, not the way the world actually is. That is a very scary approach. If history has taught us anything, it is that your enemies can identify the weakness and will lie through their teeth and on a stack of bibles (oops, sorry!) to get you to relax your guard. And so it goes with Obama-man. Our enemies wanted him to get elected because they know he will fall for their nonsense. They must be thinking, "Sucker"!

He can say what he wants, but it will not stop the murdering Muslims from wanting to kill us. In fact, I believe without a doubt, that the U.S. will suffer another attack on its shores during his administration, regardless of what he says or does.

I do not agree with those who keep harping on whether Obama-man is a Muslim or not, but I do believe he is untrustworthy and has an agenda that he is not yet revealing. And I will say this, he's probably more of a terrorist sympathizer, just like the other anti anti-terror liberal girly-men.
