Obama’s Inaugural: What He Should Say

If you're in Philadelphia on Monday, December 8, the National Constitution Center is hosting what promises to be a fascinating discussion about what Barack Obama should say to the nation on January 20. The panelists will include former speechwriters Mary Kate Cary (Bush 41) and Terry Edmonds (Clinton). Oh yeah, and I'm moderating (having written White House Ghosts: Presidents and Their Speechwriters and all).
The program is part of the center's "Address America" initiative, which invites people to suggest six words Obama should use in his inaugural address.
I'll check back in Tuesday with insights the panelists impart.

He's already said it all
At inaugural he should begin doing it.
HE SOULD SAY....
1. That he respects life more than "choice" and renounce abortion as an immoral and irresponsible act. Speak against the death penalty as too barbaric for a civilized nation.
2. He should say that everyone in America, or any civilized country, is entitled to affordable health care. Even those with pre-existing conditions who can't be insured under the present system.
3. He should speak of America with pride and the United Nation with caution.
4. He should speak strongly against terrorism and warn of the consequences.
5. He should promise to remove non funded mandates and lessen expensive environmental regulations on manufacturing. Going "Green" has gone too far.
6.He needs to say that our country must reduce our international military commitments - especially in countries that are stable and able..... Germany, France, Japan etc... Close bases and consolidate to protect a defensible realm.
7. Say that college education should be affordable to every one. Easier loans, public/ community work for tuition etc.
8. He should encourage all sorts of energy options wind, solar, nuclear and drill everywhere - Explain that drilling "footprints" are now less than 10% of what they once were and that the technology for safe drilling, on or off shore, is proven. Advocate a Federal tax on oil products to fund nuclear and sources of alternative energy.
9. He should say that capitol gains taxes must be reduced in order to encourage investment in the economy.
10. He needs to say that our country has become divided by special interests with special rights, divided by institutionalizing "victimhood", divided by an "activist" court system,
separated by identifying ourselves as "hyphenated" Americans, and the disparity between the rich and poor - with the middle ground eroding more every year.
Will he say what really matters - what need be said? Not a chance....
