Sarah Palin's Parents Kill Rats in Retirement
Many retirees would like to continue to do interesting work in retirement. Vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's parents got part-time jobs as wildlife specialists for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Chuck Heath, 70, a retired science teacher, and Sally Heath, 67, a retired secretary, travel throughout Alaska trapping or killing animals, often in remote locations. They sometimes travel for assignments to other parts of the country as well.
The Associated Press reports:
They've eradicated rat infestations, shooed geese from runways, and killed foxes that were keeping threatened Canada geese from nesting. In January 2002, they went to New York City for a two-week assignment that fit their specialty. Their job was to make sure birds and rats did not disturb the debris from the collapsed World Trade Center towers that was being searched by forensic teams for human remains in Staten Island's Fresh Kills landfill. They used snap-traps to catch mice and rats and pyrotechnics to scare off the gulls. If the birds persisted, the couple shot them as a last resort, Chuck Heath told the Associated Press on Thursday.
Heath said he was happy to leave New York and get back to Alaska. He complained to the New York Times about the heavy traffic. "I'm a country boy," he said.

The Death of Journalism
We really saw the death of "true" journalism culminate during the 2008 presidential campaign. Sharkism (and sleaze) should be its new name...that is what I call it. Sarah Palin nor any other decent respectable citizen of the U.S. had not a clue what was in store for them when she entered the political arena for Vice-President. I am still embarrassed by their lowest common denominator behavior and vile treatment of her...it was completely despicable. They set themselves on an unswerving course to completely discredit her, her works and accomplishments in Alaska, and everything about her...AND IT STILL CONTINUES EVEN THOUGH THE RACE HAS ENDED. I, being just a scribe, have concluded from this that it takes someone with intelligence to recognize intelligence. No more needs to be said.
I'm really interested in this
It's odd so many here are concerned that the headline wasn't euphemistic enough. Some inclination to be dainty, to protect something with connotation, as though Palin's reputation is so fragile...is it?
The thing is, the facts are interesting, regardless of the words chosen, the headline. Maybe there's something here that sheds light on the "drill, baby, drill" chant?
I'd love to hear more about what kind of science teacher Sarah Palin's father was. Did he believe in evolution or creationism? How does his knowledge of science inform, or not inform, Palin's views on global warming? She doesn't seem very informed in terms of science, even on the details of climate in Alaska.
