UCLA Introduces New Dismount Policy

If you ride a bike, skateboard, or scooter or if you rollerblade through UCLA's campus, you'd better pay attention. UCLA has introduced a new "dismount policy," effective October 12, that will enforce three areas on the Bruin Walk on campus. Students must dismount from their modes of transportation or pay a $202 citation, reports the Daily Bruin.

The report says UCLA police and UCLA Transportation collaborated on the decision.

"Basically, this has been a public safety issue. . . . There's such a high level of use on Bruin Walk that it makes sense for conflicts and injuries," UCLA Transportation Planning and Policy Manager David Karwaski tells the Daily Bruin. "But safety is the bottom line."

UCLA police officers will warn students for a period before issuing tickets. But students didn't seem too keen on the idea.

"It's definitely scary riding on Bruin Walk when there's a lot of people around . . . but the Strathmore [policy] is also very inconvenient. That's the only other way I'd get to campus, so people would have to take a very long route," one student tells the paper.
