UMass to Increase Tuition 15 Percent

February 25, 2009 06:19 PM ET | Alison Go | Permanent Link | Print

The University of Massachusetts trustees are likely to approve a 15 percent tuition hike for all in-state students. That is a $1,500 increase, bringing the average tuition to $11,000 a year. The fee hike would take effect next year.

Along with the tuition hike, the five-campus system plans to reduce spending by about $50 million.

Meanwhile, the faculty at the University of Massachusetts in both Amherst and Boston has agreed to a wage freeze this year. The contract deal, reached Friday, raises salaries by 1.5 percent next year and 3.5 percent the following year.

useless

The tuition waiver is only 1.7k. They're raising costs by 1.5K so I got $200 bucks. And for what? A 50% job placement rate? The career center refuses to release the names of companies that recruit from the school. You'd think that colleges would like to show how attractive the school's education is by showing solid recruiters.Any red flags yet? From my perspective the "low cost" of the school is a poor trade off for career placement

Not really tuition

Not that it matters, as far as what students are required to pay, but I believe the increase is going to be in fees, not tuition. In-state tuition is only about $1,700/yr.

what a joke

Aside from Amherst, Dartmouth Boston and Lowell are complete jokes of schools. What justification can they possibly have for such massive cuts in spending AND such a large INCREASE in revenues? Sounds like they're using the recession as an excuse to rip their students off even more... I don't like it because i don't understand. The only thing i do understand is its complete bull. The school claims they don't have enough $$, well where the f*** am i gonna find $1,500 extra bucks??
