Nonstory of the Year: Berkeley Tree-Sitters, Again
Perhaps I should have excluded this story because it was last year's top nonstory also, but the 21-month epic treehouse campout at UC-Berkeley came to an end this September, a milestone that won the nonstory category with 40.32 percent of the vote. The school is just starting to get into the thick of construction now. Here's just hoping (at least for the UC system) that the state of California's impending bankruptcy doesn't delay construction for another 21 months.
In a relatively close second-place finish, it's worth noting that 31.45 percent of the voting public were really into the 'Marching Bands Gone Wild' trend. Princeton's 'scramble band' going head-to-head with cadets from the Citadel? I could not think of a worse mismatch.

Yes, this was much, much more than a "campout". These passionate protesters risked their lives for something greater than themselves. We need more people like these, and Julia Butterfly Hill, who care about our environment. People who speak for those that cannot speak.
I ask those who criticize their efforts: What are you doing to make a difference?
Are your judgments helping you feel complete as a person?
Maybe you'll understand 30 or 50 years from, if it's not too late...
