Syracuse to Cut Merit Aid to Fund Need-Based Grants

Syracuse University plans to cut the number of merit scholarships it offers, using those funds to help pay for more need-based grants, the Daily Orange reports. A financial aid official said that typically 82 percent of Syracuse students receive some sort of need-based aid, while fewer than 20 percent benefit from merit aid. The numbers on aid disbursement will be finalized after the pool of admitted students has been determined.

The move follows the end of a fundraising campaign started in early December that collected $830,000 for scholarships, less than half the $2 million the school had hoped for.
