Expelled Art Student to Sue Yale

July 11, 2008 04:44 PM ET | Alison Go | Permanent Link | Print

Never tiring of a good art school scandal, Yale University has expelled a 19-year-old graduate art student, who claims she was told she was being dismissed because she wasn't mature enough, the New Haven Register reports. Annabel Osberg, the youngest master of fine arts student at Yale by about 10 years, is planning to sue the university, accusing it of age discrimination.

Osberg was home-schooled through high school and graduated from California State University-San Bernardino at age 18. She was accepted into Yale's top-ranked graduate art school the next year, and some $52,000 in tuition later, she was dismissed. "My parents were very proud about my acceptance at Yale. Now, everything is lost," she said.

While Osberg seems to be telling her story to pretty much anyone who will listen (check IvyGate for the video; stop looking at the camera!), Yale has not commented on the accusations, obviously taking a cue from that other art school fiasco.

Yale, age discrimination

Yale's conduct is uforgivable. Particarly, after taking all that tuition money. I hope she gets enough money to open her own art museum. Dershowitz, are you listening?

Yale expulsion

I've seen two stories on this incident, and neither has made clear the reasons for the expulsion. "Immaturity" could cover a wide variety of problems and behaviors, and I doubt very much that age alone was the reason for the decision. The graduate art program at Yale is extremely high-powered and high-pressure; the young woman may not have been able to cope well. Yale doesn't normally accept underage students in any of its schools for good reasons. Perhaps the art school's admissions committee simply made a bad call, in which case it MAY owe this woman some compensation, depending on the grounds for the expulsion.

Yale Age Discrimination

Age is only one determinant of maturity. We have all seen incredibly immature chronological adults and incredibly mature chronological youngsters.

Without knowing the facts that led Yale to make this decision we should acknowledge that we are all unable to either condemn nor endorse it.
