More Cancellations at UC Schools

Following the footsteps of Bill Clinton and assemblyman Fabian Nuñez, four other prominent figures have canceled commencement speeches on University of California campuses in solidarity with a union in continuing contract talks with UC, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Former Gen. Wesley Clark was supposed to speak for UCLA's political science department, Rep. Henry Waxman for UCLA's School of Public Health, Rep. Hilda Solis at UCLA's School of Education and Information Studies, and California Assemblywoman Fiona Ma at Stevenson College at UC-Santa Cruz.

The cancellations are a show of support for 20,000 UC healthcare and service employees, represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, who have been working without a contract since last year.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Assemblyman John Laird, slated to speak at UC-San Diego and Kresge College at UC-Santa Cruz, respectively, have both pledged to cancel their speeches if the dispute is not settled.
