Florida Protest Mirrors One in South Korea
Twenty people—mostly University of Florida students and their families—held a peaceful candlelit demonstration that mirrored similar protests in South Korea calling for the resignation of President Lee Myung-bak. Since the beginning of May, activists in Seoul have protested plans to resume imports of U.S. beef, which some say is a stand-in issue for many people's dissatisfaction with the current leadership.
One grad student from South Korea marveled at the major differences in this year's protest to the pivotal and violent demonstrations in 1987. "I haven't seen any demonstration like this," he said. "It's really kind of new."
