Professors May Boycott Summer School
Stalled contract talks between the professors union and the University of New Hampshire could lead to a summer boycott, the New Hampshire reports. For 19 months, the two sides have been fighting over contract negotiation's usual suspects: salary and health benefits.
An impasse in contract talks in 1997 resulted in a boycott then, and one school official predicts a financial hit to the tune of $1 million if summer school is canceled. "We will lose money and be even less able to pay faculty salaries or hire new faculty or build new academic facilities," he said
At least one student is annoyed with the stalemate and questions the university's assurance that should a boycott occur, students would be informed early enough to make alternative plans: "Informing us that we are not going to have summer classes doesn't make summer classes magically appear. It is not going to help the students any more. They are just going to get angrier earlier."
