An Outbreak of Flu Outbreaks

February 07, 2008 06:10 PM ET | Alison Go | Permanent Link

San Diego State isn't the only university with a flu outbreak problem.

*By the end of January, the health center at Miami University in Ohio saw 50 cases of the flu in a day, many of whom were sorority recruits. But the bug didn't discriminate and soon spread to the general student body, wiping out the health center's supply of Tamiflu.

*At least 100 cases of the flu at the University of Mississippi prompted the school to distribute masks to prevent its spread.

*A flu outbreak at the University of Notre Dame has outlasted its typical one-week run and has also proved mostly unaffected by flu shots.

*As of January 30, Central Michigan University was diagnosing up to 15 cases a day and expecting a vaccine-resistant strain to "spread like crazy in the next couple of weeks."

*North Carolina's Department of Health reports that " 'influenza-like illnesses' accounted for 4.2 percent of hospital and clinic visits in the state last week, up from just more than one percent at the same time last year." Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State University all experienced surges in sickness, but apparently none worse than Wake Forest, with 260 cases in a 10-day period.

*A little farther south, the University of South Carolina is experiencing the "worst outbreak of the flu the health center has ever seen," with 400 cases since the beginning of the semester. Officials from Oklahoma State University, with its more than 300 cases, are equally superlative: "This is the most influenza we've seen in students in at least 15 years."

*Kansas State, however, gets the "honor" for Most Out of Control Outbreak—with 2,000 (!!) students with flu symptoms and upper respiratory illnesses seeking treatment in just three weeks. "It is definitely more than usual." You think?

*If an epidemic of the common flu isn't enough to stress you out, Villanova officials have been treating students the past two weeks who have gastrointestinal norovirus—with symptoms that include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, and low-grade fever. Just three days after the virus first appeared, 15 students were sent to the hospital suffering from severe dehydration. Since then, 300 have been diagnosed. Oregon State also handled a milder Norwalk outbreak mid-January.

*Feeling a little sick after reading this post? Wondering what that icky feeling is? Says an Indiana University health official of students who suspect they're sick: "If they're not crawling in, they don't have the flu."

The flue outbreaks

I go to college myself and for the first time in over a year I am sick. I have never felt this as sick as I feel.

Influenza

Clemson University has had over 320 students who reported to their on-campus health facility, Redfern, with the flu. That doesn't take into account the students who went to a regular doctor or the hospital with these symptoms. Ravenel Elementary School in upstate SC also sent home about 80 students in just one day.

Flu spreading among universities

Western Carolina U and Appalachian State U have both had rediculous amounts of flu and mono infected student, as I am one of them.

Flu Epidemic

It is going around here at Western. Just about every student I know has the flu. I was sick for a month and I am still not 100% better. I still have some symptoms. The infirmary is not taking this serious enough. They just look at you, assume you are a drug seeker and send you home to get worse only to go back 2 days later for the same symptoms but worse than before.

I work at the hospital so I only imagine that I will be seeing those students soon.

Western Carolina University and the Flu

I can vouch for Western Carolina University being a hotspot for a flu outbreak. Over half of the students in my classes are out for flu-related symptoms. Our infirmary is filled up with appointments until next week.

I think what is the most interesting bit of information concerning the outbreak here is the lack of administration's interest in finding a solution. Considering this is around the fifth day that such symptoms have been prevalent, our administration has yet to voice concern or attempt to devise a way to stem the spread of the sickness. Is it the same with other universities?

the flu epidemic

Once again I attend Western Carolina University and I am scared to leave my room due to the fact so many people have the flu infection. My next door neighbor had me take her to the infirmary and without even looking at her and taking her to the back they turned her away. She went to her regular doctor and ... wow she had the flu. It is as if the infirmary is either rejecting or misdiagnosing patients in hopes to avoid quarantine!

I can only wish our administration will finally step up and actually do something about this flu epidemic!

I also attend Western and once again I can vouch that EVERYONE is sick, even some teachers are cancelling classes. But, heres a suprise, the infirmary is doing absolutely nothing, like normal. I also wish the administration would do something.

WCU

I dont see how WCU hasnt gotten the point yet! I tried to make an appointment at the health center and they are booked solid for the next TWO days!

I'm suffering and what's worse, my teachers arent being understanding at all. They are telling us we HAVE to come to class.. brilliant PhDs... wow.

WCU Flu Outbreak

I also attend WCU. I haven't had the flu, but I agree with you its a nightmare to get an appointment.I called the health center on Monday, to get blood test results, from the end of last month. They didn't have the time they claimed to call me and tell me that I was seriously sick, and needed to be seen at Duke University Medical Center A.S.A.P. My professors have finally agreed that if you have the flu they are willing to forgo there attendance policies, which they are really strict, anyway, just so they don't get the flu. They really should shut the school down at least for a few days and sanitize the classroom buildings and maybe the University Center, and Gym. My grandmother called and told me a bunch of college in Northern GA, have shut down for a few days, because of this epidemic. I personally wish we all could just boycott our classes, and tell other people to do the same, but I don't want to risk failing, because of it.

The Flu at WCU

I started experiencing flu symptoms around Sunday evening. I brushed it off to be a cold and now I've been sick for 6 days, today being Friday. With all the pressures of a music major, I've tried attending observations and classes for the first 3 days and felt miserable doing so. Finally, I gave up and decided to miss my ensemble rehearsals and classes which have terribly strict attendance policies and pay no mind to letting you turn in late work or retake a test. So, I may have delayed myself of getting better because of this ridiculous school.

It is quite amazing to see this. I got to Michigan Tech and we are having the same problem. EVERYONE is getting this flu. I have been lucky enough to not get it yet but I am just assuming its a matter of time. It seems to be hitting schools hard, I am assuming because we are always around other students.

Western Carolina University and the Flu

Hey Gary of NC,

What do the expect the Admin to do? It's an airborne virus. Maybe they could wave the magic wand if ya ask real nice!

SICK,SICK

IM 40 VERY HEALTHY AND ENERGENIC,3WEEKS AGO I STARTED VOMINTING,NOW I HAVE EXTREME DIAHREA EVERY MORNING FOR THE LAST 3 WEEKS, IM NOW ON ANTI-BIOS BUT I STILL HAVE THE DIAHREA,LOST WEIGHT,AND I HAD THE FLUE SHOT BACK IN NOVEMBER,NOW THE DOC SAYS MY POTASSIUM LEVELS ARE SPIKING,AND DOES NOT KNOW WHY?IS THERE ANYONE WHO HAS THE SAME SYMTOMS,AND IS THERE A REMEDY?

Michael Case

You don't have the flu. You have a stomach virus. The REAL flu does not affect the stomach. So the shot you received in November would not protect you from something like this. Not sure why you are on antibiotics, as they would not be used for the real flu, either. Both the flu and your stomach thing are viral, not bacterial.

sick

Wow, I thought it was just my area and college that has had these out breaks! I go to Indian Hills Community College, in Ottumwa Iowa and it is spreading like wildfire. I had to wait a few hours to get to our campus health office. Even our nurse practitioner sent an e-mail to all faculty worning then that many students might not make it to class!

SICK

Im a health science major in UCLA , i have been down with this terrible flu for over a month ,it worries me a lot while health officials dont pay attention to the flu outbreak, instead the politics has taken all over the media , i have used nearly all advertised flu medications , i had to drop some of my classes because i couldnt afford to spread it to other students.is there any one who can help me with a med to reduce this ugly symptoms ,expecially running nose and sneezing .
