Delaware Axes Creative Writing Concentration

Now that it's down to two professors, the University of Delaware's creative writing concentration will cease to exist, the Review, the university's student newspaper, reports. After two professors retired in the past several years and it became increasingly clear that no new hires were in the pipeline, UD's English department has shuttered the low-enrollment concentration (with fewer than 10 students) and instead encourages interested students to pursue such areas as professional writing, literary studies, journalism, or interactive media.

The concentration, however, has not gone gently into that good night. Last semester, one student organized a protest in defense of the program, and many recognize the interest in creative writing classes, if not the concentration. As a result, the English department will continue to offer creative writing classes in the curriculum.
