Arizona State to Lay Off 200 Faculty Members

October 28, 2008 02:54 PM ET | Alison Go | Permanent Link | Print

Arizona State University announced it will lay off 200 or more faculty associates and will most likely increase some class sizes, from about 300 to 1,000 students, for example, the Arizona Republic reports. ASU currently employs 991 "faculty associates," employees who often work part time and are neither tenured nor tenure track.

At one ASU campus, walls have already been removed in some buildings to accommodate larger classes. ASU expects $25 million or more in additional state budget cuts (on top of the $30 million already made), which is the largest amount of the state's various public universities.

Officials did not announce which departments would see the greatest reductions.

increase the enrollment for foreign student

If only the immigration procedure weren't too paranoid towards future student in american college, maybe the university wouldn't hurt that much on this economic crisis, I believe US college still the diva for international student, but unfortunately, the INS and US embassy across the world didn't think that this foreign student may actually bringing money to save the business.

Arizona is at least following the federal rules and not allowing illegal aliens in-state tuition. I resent that illegal aliens are allowed in-state tuition in my state. But not to worry, once Obamaa gets in -- he'll just legalzie them all.

Arizona's governor to blame.

How does a rabidly liberal Democratic governor retain power and popularity in one of the most Republican of states? Well she counters her own godless hippie outlook with an ultra-conservative fiscal policy that has ravaged Arizona's universities and schools with the worst budget cuts in history. Republicans dont care if all the schools burn to the ground and the roads crumble beneath so long as they personally dont have to pay any taxes. Democratics in Arizona seem to not care either, so long as they can pat themselves on the back with the thought that they have a 'progressive' 'feminist' for a governor. A claim based solely on the fact that Gov. Janet is openly lesbian. ASU is a party school, but NAU and U of Arizona are respectable institutions. How long until they have to compromise quality? How can they expect to compete with overrated private schools like Stanford and USC when hamstringed thus so?
