Great idea?

I just finished reading through a bunch of scholarship essays for the myUsearch.com scholarship and it's painfully clear that many students do not learn how to write in high school. We did not recieve one single essay without major grammatical or spelling errors and even some of the smartest students clearly needed to greatly improve their writing skills. So, I understand why Michigan State is doing this, but is this just going to lower the bar even more? I fear that it will.
