Quinnipiac Students Confused About 'Deplorable Acts of Hatred'

September 23, 2008 04:31 PM ET | Alison Go | Permanent Link | Print

A cryptic memo from the administration at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut that informed students of two "deplorable acts of hatred" has frustrated students interested in more information, the Quad News reports. According to an official, the acts were related to religion and sexual orientation, and the secrecy is at the request of the victims. The News also found out that one of the incidents involved an anti-Semitic slur written in a dorm.

A number of students wonder what they're supposed to do with just a smidge of information. "If they told us the facts up front, maybe we could work toward improving awareness on this campus," said one junior. "Instead, we are left in the dark, and these things just keep on happening." Another student adds: "How do we know what to prevent if we don't know the exact action?"

Wow, these are college students asking that?

"How do we know what to prevent if we don't know the exact action?"

Oh, man, what a line. It seems to me, after applying a bit of critical thinking and logic to the issue, that if you don't know what it was, you don't have to change your habits or become more 'aware'. If you're not given to going around spray-painting nasty things about other people on walls, you're not the target of the comments.

And I have no doubt those involved with the incident know exactly what the administration means.

Who's teaching these kids how to think independently, anyhow? I didn't need a coloring book example to understand the message. And I wasn't confused by it, either. That these students of a higher institution were confounded by what was an all-too-clear message says either they still don't know how to think or they haven't been taught. I'm hoping it's they haven't been taught.
