Dozens Arrested at Notre Dame, Vanderbilt
Police at the University of Notre Dame broke up a house party and arrested 37 students early Sunday morning, the Observer reports. Most arrests were for underage drinking, and 17 of those apprehended were student-athletes. Authorities also raided three South Bend, Ind., bars.
A police news release outlined the circumstance of the arrests, which included students allegedly scattering into and away from the house and some found "hiding under beds, in closets, the attic, and in the basement."
The charges included consumption of alcohol by minors, possession of false ID, false informing, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest.
At Vanderbilt University, 51 students were arrested at a Sigma Chi fraternity event to celebrate the football team's victory over Mississippi, the Vanderbilt Hustler reports. The students were arrested at an off-campus campground after firecrackers were lit at the site. The charges included disorderly conduct and underage consumption, and all the students were released on $1,500 bond each.

underreporting of more serious crimes
Alcohol abuse and underage drinking may seem to be a focus at schools as Vanderbilt, but speaking from experience, more serious crimes such as hate crimes, assaults, and rape may be under-reported and even covered up by university officials, not to scar the reputation of these schools, which should be the greater tragedy.

What Bob said is completely true, nicely put.

The arrests on college campuses is getting ridiculous. How do 51 kids get arrested for disorderly conduct? That is enough people for a riot. The system is bad and college students are paying for it. $1,500 per student, college students can't afford that. And 37 at Notre Dame, again I think it has to be a joke. These are two of the best universities in the nation and things get taken to this? Underage kids drink, it happens at every college and to think that arresting some is going to stop it is sad. Things need to be looked at for what they are and dealt with accordingly.
