Arizona Affirmative-Action Ban Off Ballot

August 22, 2008 04:55 PM ET | Alison Go | Permanent Link | Print

An anti-affirmative-action ballot initiative in Arizona—one similar to those passed in California, Michigan, and Washington—hasn't collected enough valid signatures to go on the ballot, Secretary of State Jan Brewer said Thursday. Brewer threw out 139,774 signatures for various reasons, leaving 194,961 valid signatures, short of the 230,047 necessary to bring a proposed state constitutional amendment to a vote.

The Arizona Civil Rights Initiative, which would ban the use of race- and sex-based preferences in state-run universities and other government agencies, was spearheaded by Ward Connerly, the same man who lobbied for such proposals in California, Michigan, and Washington and is working on similar measures in Missouri, Colorado, and Nebraska.

Supporters of the initiative in Arizona plan to appeal the secretary of state's decision next week.

affirmative action

In South Africa the ANC government is pursuing a policy of affirmative active like a new found religion. No rational person familiar with SA's political history would deny that such action is required after decades of rule by a white minority government during which time whites had been privileged, but now SA has a overwhelming black majority ruling the country and their policy of affirmative action has become almost an obsession. Fortunately the "new" group in the ANC which will occupy the top post after next year's general election has indicated that there should be sunset clause to this action. At the moment it is nothing more than racist and apartheid in a different guise.

Speaking from a distance all I can say is that if Obama becomes the next president of the USA he would need all the talents in the world to keep the conservative sections both in America and overseas in a happy mood. I don't envy him.

affirmative action

by it's very definition, affirmative action = discrimination based on race or sex. NOT the direction we should be going.

I love the sound of replublican's whining in the morning!
