Cougar Sighting at Maryland

July 31, 2008 05:32 PM ET | Alison Go | Permanent Link | Print

The University of Maryland sent a campus alert today warning students of a "possible cougar" on the College Park campus, the Washington City Paper reports. The cougar (the nonhuman type) has been seen at least twice and was described as "light tan and tawny brown, about 4 feet long with a 4 foot tail, and weighing about 50 pounds."

Cougars are not indigenous to the state (or anywhere so far east of the Rockies, really), leading to some confusion among Maryland public-safety officers. "We have never dealt with this before," said a DPS captain. "We will get the occasional report of a coyote on campus, which usually will end up just being a fox."

So where did it come from? "Your guess is as good as mine," officials told the paper.

A COUGAR SIGHTING IN NC

I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE OF SPOTTING A BLACK COUGAR OR ONE HECK OF A CAT IN NC. ON HIGHWAY 27, OUTSIDE OF LILLINGTON,NC AT THE LANDFILL. THIS CAT WAS HUGE- AT LEAST 65 LBS OR LARGER. IN MY AMAZEMENT AFTER FIRST REALIZING IT WAS A HUGE CAT- I WATCHED IT RUN ACROSS THE YELLOW SAND AT THE LANDFILL. I STOOD THERE AND OBSERVED THE CAT FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES. THEN HE DISAPPEARED INTO THE WOODS. I JUST WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE HAS SEEN A COUGAR IN THIS AREA AS WELL? I STILL CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT I SEEN.

AMAZED IN FUQUAY

Cougar(s) in Blackstone, VA

Cougars have been making an appearance lately in a rural town in Virginia, too. Several local residents have seen one in the last few years but kept quiet because they didn't think anyone would believe it. A number of sightings have been made public from March thru July 2008. Go to www.cougarintheneighborhood.blogspot.com to read about the Blackstone incidents. Many letters have more recently started coming in to the local newspaper from all over the U.S. telling about sightings in other states.

Cougar

On August 1,08 playing golf my foursum all saw a what looked like orange/brown lab w/ a cat head and face. It looked to weigh about 100lbs to 120lbs we were about 40yrds away. I know that it is very unlikely it was a mt.lion but when you see what we saw you would think you were in Montana. It was something right out of the zoo. They say there was a sighting in Monmouth Maine and the golf course was in Leeds Maine not far from each other.
