Dentistry Student Who Prompted Investigation Resigns

An accidental whistle-blower in the UCLA orthodontics program who resigned in March may take legal action against the university after claiming the last few months have been "a living terror," the Daily Bruin reports. The orthodontics resident prompted an investigation in November by the student newspaper of allegations of "admissions impropriety" in the school, which included accusations of preference for applicants who are large donors or with families that have made significant contributions to the program. After an audit of its admissions policy last year, the dental school denied the preferential treatment allegations but did adopt stricter guidelines.

Since the Daily Bruin story ran in November, the student says the director has taken away patients, limited access to study materials, halted his progress, and discredited him among his colleagues. "You have caused me to be unable to sleep, unable to work, and unable to enjoy any aspect of the employment, the work and the study I so looked forward to," he wrote in his resignation letter. The student, university, and department head declined comment on word of a lawsuit.

Why no one does the right thing

Speak out against impropriety, illegality and wrongs by the powers that be and you get your head chopped off more often than not. No one likes a tattle tale as kids and when a whistleblower blows, they get smacked virtually every time. No one wants to do the right thing if it means losing their undeserved and unearned perks.

The powerful of the ME generation has sired a new generation believing themselves to be entitled to things they do not deserve merely because of their powerful parents. And those self same parents enable this attitude by believing that just because they have power means their kids can have the same selfish perks, too. And in the meantime, those who want to do right are stymied, knocked down, silenced and shoved out. If anyone wonders why we have Enron, major league steroid abuse and other abuses of power and privilege, they need look no further than here - where those who want to do right learn the painful lesson that no amount of right will combat a privileged wrong, that nice guys really do finish last and that playing by the rules earns you only grief.
