Colorado Newspaper Suspends Opinion Section

Two very controversial and racially provocative columns written for the University of Colorado-Boulder's student newspaper, the Campus Press, prompted editors last week to temporarily suspend their own opinion section from publication. The articles—titled "If it's war the Asians want..." and "No hablo ingles"—were labeled examples of "institutional racism" and prompted protesters to rally on campus and ask for the resignation of the editors involved. "I find it to be hate speech," one student told the Press. "It's disturbing, disgusting."

The newspaper has released an official response and agreed to diversity training. Another group of editors who disagreed with the decision to publish the "If it's war" column also published their own response: "It was a mistake, and we do not stand behind the decision to publish the opinion. It has harmed the campus community. It has harmed our rapport with our sources, detracted from the content of the website's other sections and thrown the Campus Press in a truly unsavory light."
