Storms Destroy Much of Union University Campus

Heavy storm activity and at least one tornado destroyed a number of dorms at Union University in Tennessee, trapping students for hours and sending 51 to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Students have begun returning to campus to retrieve their belongings, but the school has canceled class until February 18. A message from the president outlines the damage and lays out a plan for recovery:

Seventeen buildings received some kind of damage. Approximately 40 percent of the dorms were destroyed, and another 40 percent were severely damaged. Additional damage has been observed in other academic and administrative buildings. The damage from this storm exceeds the impact of the 2002 tornado by 15-fold....
