Karl Rove Resigns; No One Cares About UC President

In a move that will affect at least 191,000 students (200 of whom—probably student newspaper editors—will actually care), the president of the University of California system has announced his resignation and will be leaving his post in June 2008.

Much like that other guy who resigned this week, Robert Dynes presided over a time that has been described as "dubious," "tumultuous," and "trying"—marked by diversity and enrollment issues, and—notably—the 2006 compensation scandal, where state lawmakers called for his immediate removal after an audit discovered more than $334 million in questionable pay and perks.

Trying not to dwell on negativity, the media also report that Dynes has earned praise for increasing university transparency, adding another campus, and retaining control over high-profile research facilities like the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif.

In true political form, Dynes says he is leaving to spend more time with his wife. —Alison Go
