Nowhere Is Safe: Lawyers Invade the Final Frontier
The next time a Klingon slips and falls on Vulcan property, University of Nebraska alumni will be there to handle the lawsuit. Nebraska's law school is scheduled to receive $2 million in federal funding for a space and telecommunications law degree program, the Daily Nebraskan reports. The school will be the first in the country (and fourth in the world) to offer such a degree.
The Outer Space Treaty, signed by the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union in 1967, is what spawned the study of space law, and it outlines the potential duties of a space lawyer, who could potentially launch a career in national security, the military, telecommunications, or agriculture—or even get a job at the awesomely named United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. —Alison Go
