Columbia Changes Part of Its Security Plan

Reacting to the attacks at Virginia Tech, Columbia University announced yesterday that students will no longer be allowed to work as card-swipers at the security desks in dormitory entrances, the Spectator reports. Public safety officers will take over those duties. "In response to Virginia Tech, our goal was to make sure that we have uniformed officers in each residence hall and in Lerner [Hall, a hub of campus activity]for the rest of the semester for added security precautions," says Lisa Hogarty, executive vice president for Student and Administrative Services. But one student who was working as a card-swiper says she doubts the switch will improve security. "If people really want to get into the building, they'll find a way," she tells the Spectator.--Kenneth Terrell
