Stanford Celebrates USC Upset, but Team Is Still Not Above .500

A heroes' welcome greeted Stanford University football players in Palo Alto early Sunday morning as they returned from their upset victory over No. 1-ranked University of Southern California, the Stanford Daily reports. The team's buses were mobbed by fans, and police tried their hardest to contain the explosion of glee, champagne, shoving, and firecrackers at the scene.

The "epic" victory also instigated a small bonfire started on a pile of trash, books, magazines, and cardboard boxes—a center for chants of "USC, R. I. P." and "Whose house? Our house!" ' (It was an away game, but whatever.) When fire officials attempted to quell the scene and identify the firebugs, they were cleverly greeted with the chorus from Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire."

While students reveled in the never-before-seen football-induced jubilation ("This is finally the big football school I wanted," said one junior), the 2-3 "champions" were upbeat and armed with cliché. "So many times in life you have people telling you a hundred times you can't, and a hundred times no," Coach Jim Harbaugh told the crowd. "Today, our players said, 'Yes, you can.' "
