Students Dismayed Over Possible Maryland Hate Crime
A single piece of rope has outraged the University of Maryland, with student minority leaders calling for more discussion about the school's racial tensions and diversity policies, the Diamondback reports. A 5-foot noose was hung from a tree outside the Nyumburu Cultural Center, the school's hub for "black social, cultural, and intellectual interaction."
Consternation followed the news. "This noose is not just the black, African, or Caribbean student's problem...it's everyone's problem," said the president of the university's Black Student Union.
Little information has been released by the police, but officials are currently interviewing witnesses, reviewing campus video surveillance, and creating a timeline of the event. —Alison Go
