Reading the majority of these comments its easy to see the biases with which the "researchers" are embarking. You are in great company!!

If you read my previous, very long, post then you and I both have way too much time on our hands. My sarcastic humor is not meant to be disrepctful. Its just that Blacks get tired of the same old stuff.

I have a perfectly good understanding of rudimentary statistics. Newsflash!! Statistics are not real numbers.

My question is why do these "statistics" always seem to correspond with centuries old philosophies? For centuries Whites have asserted that Africans, as well as every other group, were intellectually inferior, way before any such plausible "studies" were performed. Due to an archaic legacy of discrimination, I am sure that a random sampling of American Blacks would yield less than desirable results than, say, a sampling of native Africans who perhaps may not have been as poisoned.

"Low intelligence" in American Blacks is not innate to the race but likely a result of low expectations. A simplistic example is taking a set of twins and from infancy instilling in one that he is stupid and worthless while affirming the other. Who will score better on an IQ test? Now imagine that those two children are a Black child and a White child. Intelligence is influenced by DNA but exposure and expectations makes a world of difference.

I am Jamaican and you will find that there are a higher percentage of highly educated Blacks in the islands and Africa than what you will find in America. The large percentage that migrate here are here for academic and professional reasons. Despite colonization, most of us have managed to develop a strong sense of who we are and our potential. Education is a goal taught from infancy. I daresay a random poll of Blacks from other places would yield much different results than those you came across. But those who are conducting the research have their own agenda and will not dare stray from that path. Doing so will probably cause them to question deeply held prejudices and beliefs. But you are the intelligence researcher so why not blaze a trail. I dare you.

Another group you may want to look at is the fast growing group of African American homeschoolers of which I am a part. Many of us have realized that the current education system is designed to "de-intellectualize" its children, particularly Black children. With the growth of this group, a random poll of Blacks in, lets say, 15-20 years will yield results that show that intelligence is not innate to race but is a result of many other factors.

My reasoning, though not buttressed by lofty statistics and science, is based on real life observation and relationships. Research does not speak with people but deals with the "human-animal".

According to statistics my sister and I should have been pregnant highschool dropouts and my brothers incarcerated (all but one college educated and all doing well!!) My parents, yes I am not a bastard, well, my mother should have been a single parent on welfare (oops, another stat. down the tubes). And what of my father the architecht? Hey how come no one polled us? A Black immigrant family of six. What do your statistics say about us? Please accept my humor.

You obviously don't understand rudimentary statistics. We are dealing here with curves. Being hispanic or black does not mean you can't have an IQ of 135. There are just fewer blacks than whites in those ranges - there aren't a lot of whites up that high either. The center of the bell curve for blacks is 85; for whites it's 100. For "hispanics" (a dubious racial category anyway) it lies somewhere in between.

What does this all mean? In a random sampling of 100 blacks, most will be within one standard deviation of 85. In a random sampling of 100 whites, most will be within one standard deviation of 100. This conclusion has been tested again and again and again and there is no credible scholary, intelligence research to dispute it.

As for how hereditary an individual's IQ is, that is less certain - some estimate 50% others around 70%. But even in this case, it is quite rare for a child's IQ to be more than one standard deviation away from the parent. If two parents of 135 have a child, chances are that child will have an IQ of at least 120. Chances are better it will be higher.

As for why there are so many low IQ's among blacks, look no further than behaviors associated with low IQ, among which includes having a lot of kids out of wedlock. Further, poverty is correlated strongly to both IQ and single parenthood of too many kids. As is the case with middle class whites, middle class, higher IQ blacks simply have fewer children than lower class, low IQ blacks. The result is that, over time, the lower IQ blacks become a greater and greater proportion of the black population.

Intelligence reasearcher!! Please spare me. I would love to see the results of your "research". For which firm do you work or do you draw your conclusions from your delusional biases.You have haughtily raised yourself above Whites, Blacks and your fellow Hispanics. A little humility and honesty goes a long way (emphasis on honesty).

There are countless genetic differences between blacks and other races and these explain best the abysmal academic "failure" of most black students: their brains simply can't handle what most white people regard as basic academic material (averages, propotions, percentages, grammar, etc). There are certainly exceptions to the rule, but, just as white people really can't jump or run very fast compared to black people, black people can't do as well as white people, on average, academically.

Regarding where I put myself on the IQ continuum, my IQ is 135. Yes, I am hispanic and mestizo and yes, I am quite abnormal for non white hispanics, the bulk of whom are found above most blacks but below most whites on the IQ scale. As an intelligence researcher, all I can say to Cecilia of Virginia is read a scholarly article and assess the statistical validity of its methodology!

Fakery/Do better of XX

Bravo on "Do Better of XX's" comment about a superior mind challenging its own conclusions. Unfortunately, due to the state of the public school system in America, where children sit in an institutionalized setting and are spoon-fed "information" and multiple choice tests reign supreme, independent thinking and logical conclusions are discouraged.

"Cecilia's" inspired post focuses on parental responsibility in their children's education. When this has been achieved, then we will see a revolution in American education and a narrowing of the achievement gap.

We need to stop hiding behind "racial differences" and get to the essence of the problem. It's not a Black, White, et al problem; its a societal problem.

Black IQs lower on average

Mr. Hernandez, please post the source of your very scholarly statistics. I am sure many of us would love to view them. Also, where do you place yourself in these "stats".

Achievement has absolutely nothing to do with race. That thwarted philosophy was used decades ago to oppress Blacks and Asians, citing cranial and facial structure as indicators of intelligence. Please read a book Mr. Hernandez.

I read three comments,and that's enough.I doubt the veracity of all three, and I'd call them trolls except they attempt to sound reasonable.

If "Disgusted Teacher" wants to make broad generalizations about minority students (Hmong? Thai? Nigerian? Filipino?), maybe he should learn to write a paragraph in standard US English with correct grammar and punctuation. Just look at the post! If you taught and wrote like that, what kind of example could you provide? The article talks about lower quality teachers; how can you complain about anyone's achievement if that's the best YOU can do?.

The next post thinks correlation equals causality. Lame. A superior mind thinks things through and challenges its own conclusions.

The next post just shows more bad thinking.

Maybe someone at US News just finds bad posts like this and fills up the comments area with them to get more page views or something. All I know is, if this is the quality of the conversation, the minds of the people doing the writing are in just as much intellectual danger as the poor underachieving "minorities" but are far blinder to it. An illiterate person probably knows he or she can't read or write well; what about people who read and write but can't THINK?

Teachers leaving Negro students

Perhaps, the study should evaluate whether the Teachers want to put up with roudy, insubordinate, in-your-face, don't care attitude of most Negro students. Their parents(Mother) doesn't take any time to help them because she is probably single and illiterate also. Schools have become nothing more than politically correct baby-sitting wards that disable good teachers from performing their work. Inner City schools especially. There is no disiclipline against minorities. There is no ambition or expectation of achievement, just leave me alone until I become 16.

We should hire cops as teachers, not professionally trained people who care.
