I too would be interested to read this I-search paper. Haley-May, would you be willing to post it online and add a link? It just goes to show that you don't need an elaborate set-up or extensive resources to do interesting research. I suspect that the psychology of hugs runs deep. It's worth remembering that some people who live alone or apart from family and friends don't get hugs on a regular basis. It's easy to forget how important and meaningful hugs can be, or how lonely it can be to live without them day after day. We should all remember to give hugs often, particularly to friends or family who live alone.
Taking the hug study to the next level
It's great that students are getting out of the classroom and into the world to explore people's actual behavior. It is also a great way to learn about the challenges of sorting out complex and interacting influences, such as the locale of the study (some places might be more conducive to getting people to request hugs, even season or the kind of day--sunny or overcast--, or how busy vs. deserted the area is at the moment. This could actually keep an entire class busy, fanning out across the city in force. That is a fun idea!
A tricky subject to study.
This was a nice human interest story. I wonder if the "attractiveness" or the warmth of the vibes coming from the available huggers could influence the choice of participants as much as race or other aspects that were being studied. It is tricky, but you could control that variable somewhat by employing huggers who are all attractive.

Inspiring
That is such interesting research! At first, I thought this article really was going to be about hugs. To then understand that there was an underlying motivation for the research-to analyze and observe racism-was really fascinating to me. It's inspirational to know what our NYC high school students are capable of. As an NYC teacher, I see it often in my own classroom but students (like you) rarely get the recognition. Congrats on thinking. Better yet, congrats on reminding US readers to think about something as basic as hugs. Congrats on appearing at USNWR. The more that young people "speak" with creativity, the better for all of us. With youtube and the web in general, you have a forum that previous generations did not. Go for it.
