- 1989: About 100,000 students gather in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square to mourn Chinese reform leader Hu Yaobang.
- 1918: World War I German fighting ace Manfred von Richthofen, "The Red Baron," is shot down and killed over Vaux sur Somme, France.
