Morning Buzz: Jan. 9, 2008
As quickly as Iowa's results shook up the race, Hillary Clinton's and John McCain's victories in New Hampshire last night again detoured the unpredictable road to the White House. Now that the Republican field has flattened and Clinton's win in New Hampshire seems to turn the Democratic field into a tough two-person race, the campaigns are looking toward the next primaries in Michigan, South Carolina, Nevada, and Florida, and then Super Tuesday, which is February 5.
And while the top headlines are focused on speculating who the next president will be, President Bush is in Israel today pressing that a Mideast peace pact be made before he leaves office. He will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem and with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Both leaders on the eve of Bush's arrival pledged to have negotiators work on what they call "final status issues," including what the borders would be between Israel and the future Palestine, competing claims to Jerusalem, the city both sides want to have as their capital, and the fate of Palestinian refugees.
Foggy conditions and a blanket of smoke from a nearby brush fire produced hazardous driving conditions on a stretch of Interstate 4 between Tampa and Orlando this morning creating a 50-car pileup. Florida officials said that at least three people were killed in the massive accident. The poor visibility hindered rescue operations.
