As a summit of Latin American leaders opens in the capital of the Dominican Republic today, all eyes are on the escalating conflict between Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, which was touched off last week by a cross-border raid conducted by Colombian forces. Earlier today, Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa demanded that Colombian leaders formally apologize for entering the country's territory.

Students at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill are in shock over the death of student body president Eve Marie Carson, who was found shot to death in the middle of an intersection about a mile from campus on Thursday. Police say they believe the act was random and are investigating.

More bad economic news: Consumer confidence in the United States has sunk to its lowest level in five years, according to new figures released today.
