Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was put under house arrest today and thousands of her supporters were rounded up by police in an effort to quash a mass protest against President Pervez Musharraf's declaration of emergency rule. Musharraf suspended the Constitution last Saturday.

Rudy Giuliani's former police commissioner, Bernard Kerik, has been indicted by a federal jury on corruption charges. Kerik, a nominee in 2004 to head the Department of Homeland Security, was originally under investigation because he accepted $165,000 in renovations to his Bronx apartment from a mob-connected construction company that wanted his help in winning city building contracts.

Drug maker Merck said it will pay out $4.85 billion to the thousands who sued the pharmaceutical company over the painkiller Vioxx. Vioxx was pulled off the market in 2004, when Merck researchers determined that the drug doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke.
