Thousands of Pakistani lawyers have taken to the streets to protest President Pervez Musharraf's decision on Sunday to impose emergency rule and suspend Pakistan's Constitution. The protesters have been met with violence from police, and more than 1,500 people have been arrested in 48 hours. Meanwhile, the United States and Britain are reviewing aid given to the unstable Muslim country, which was taken over by Musharraf in a 1999 coup.
Hollywood writers went on strike today when negotiations fell through between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The first programs affected by the strike will be late-night TV talk shows, for which writers are vital because the hosts tend to comment on current events in their monologues.
A new study shows a link between a lack of sleep and obesity in children. Researchers discovered that every additional hour per night that a third grader spends sleeping reduces by 40 percent that child's chances of becoming obese by the sixth grade. Scientists suggest two reasons for the correlation. First, lack of sleep wreaks havoc on two important hormones that control appetite. And second, tired children are less likely to exercise and more likely to be couch potatoes.
