More than 2,000 gold miners were rescued from a mine near Johannesburg, South Africa, and more are being brought to the surface. The entrapment of more than 3,000 miners occurred after a pressurized air pipe snapped and tumbled down a shaft, causing damage to an elevator. In light of the incident, both the mining company and South Africa's minerals and energy minister vowed to make the industry safer.

Leaders of the two Koreas pledged to sign a peace treaty to officially end the Korean War, which was suspended with a cease-fire agreement in 1953.

A cargo plane plummeted into a neighborhood of the capital city of Congo, Kinshasa, killing at least five people. The neighborhood is located near the city's main airport. While many cargo planes in Congo are flown by experienced pilots, they are often old and ill maintained. No word yet as to what caused this particular crash.
